Stair elevators are elevator systems designed for those who have difficulty in using stairs, ie climbing up and down. These elevators are generally an alternative solution when classical type elevators cannot be made. Classical human elevators operating vertically cannot be built in some places, there may be many reasons for this. For example, the motor room may not be available for a vertical elevator, there is not enough depth in the building or there is not enough space for the elevator. For classical type elevators, an area of at least 100 x 100 cm is required in the building so that a single elevator can work in this area. Of course, this size may show a smaller or larger requirement than elevator technology.

It is a very suitable elevator model for the elderly, the disabled can use this elevator, as well as those with temporary ailments, leg disorders including sports injuries, and difficulty in climbing up and down stairs.

This elevator model consists of a seat that moves on a rail mounted on the ladder. That’s why a stairlift can be called a “chair lift”.

Chair lifts can be applied to almost all types of stairs. The width of the stair treads requires larger than 70 cm depending on the elevator model. In 2021 technology, an elevator can be built up to a slope of 72%. Considering that the angle of standard stairs is up to 45%, we can also say that any type of steep stairs can be made. It can be applied to any type of round, straight, angular, spiral staircase.

In addition, stair lifts are divided into 2 separate groups as indoor and outdoor. Thus, a more affordable product can be preferred according to the place to be made. For example, a model produced for outdoor can be installed in a necessary place for indoor, but unnecessarily more cost will be paid.

There is also a separate model of stair lifts that consists of a platform that can be climbed on by wheelchair. However, this model will not be explained in this subject as it is called “platform type stairlift for the disabled”.

It began to be thought and designed in Europe towards the end of the 1920s with chair lifts. In the 1960s after the war years, the first stair elevators began to be put on the market.

Founded in 1886, Handicare company put the first stair elevators to the market after 1960.

Since chair lifts are folded, they do not take up space on the stairs and do not prevent passages. The rail of the lift does not prevent the transportation of goods because the rail system is mounted from below and where no one can anatomically step.

They are extremely safe, there are seat belts on the seat as standard, and many seat belt models are available according to the person’s discomfort. No case of falling from the chair has yet been reported.

There are sensitive safety sensors on the sides, armrests and under the stairlift. If something touches, hits or jams in the seat while it is moving, the elevator stops immediately thanks to sensors.

Stair lifts move with both a standard joystick and remote controls. So you can call the elevator to the floor or send it to the floor you want.

The most advanced models of stair lifts according to today’s technology are models with double drive motors. These double drive motors are not like backup motors, they work synchronously. If one stops or malfunctions, the other stops to prevent further damage. But these engines always run at 50% performance, so they do not get tired, heat or wear like single-engine systems. Thus, the risk of failure is also reduced.

Stair lifts always work with DC, that is, the electrical power from the battery. It does not work with power from city electricity. Thus, it is not affected by power cuts. Otherwise, the person using it could stay on the steps when the power was cut. But since it moves with battery power, the stairlift is definitely not affected by power outages. When the seat reaches the stops, it automatically starts to charge. There is a charging station at each stop, and stair lifts charge themselves without the need for outside intervention.

Chair lifts can be made up to 6 floors.

Outdoor stair lifts have IP certificates and are resistant to external weather conditions. However, they are covered with a cover. The reason for using this cover is not to be affected by rain, but to keep the seat clean when desired.

Periodic maintenance of these elevators is essential, as in other elevators. Depending on the elevator travel distance and frequency of use, maintenance should be done every 6 months or once a year.

Stair lifts are subject to the “disabled products” regulation and the VAT rate is zero.

Those who want to have this elevator model built need to get permission from the municipality.

is arrow; the elevator is not subject to a license or permit. According to the Article 42 of the Law on FLOOR OWNERSHIP No. 4133 and published in the Official Gazette dated 23/6/1965 for stair lifts to be built in the common area:

Article 42 – Flat owners cannot make any changes in the common areas of the main real estate on their own; All the innovations and additions that will help the common places to be used properly or to make them more comfortable and easy to use or to increase the benefit to be obtained from these places are made on the decision of the floor owners with the majority of the number and plot share.
(Annexed paragraph: 1/7 / 2005-5378 / 19th Art.) In case of necessity for the life of the disabled, the project amendment is negotiated at the meeting to be held by the floor owners within three months at the latest and the decision is made with the majority of the number and the plot share. In case the meeting cannot be held within this period or the request for modification is mostly not accepted; Upon the request of the relevant floor owner, he informs that the building security is not endangered and the construction, repair and installation is made according to the approved project change or plan obtained from the relevant authorities based on the commission report. The relevant authorities finalize the certified project change or sketch requests within six months at the latest. The establishment of the commission, the working procedure and the procedures and principles regarding the process after the use of the disabled are determined by a regulation to be prepared jointly by the Ministry of Public Works and Settlement and the Administration for Disabled People. The expenses of these works are paid by those who benefit from the innovations, according to the utilization rate.

As a result, stair lifts are elevator systems that make life easier for those who have difficulty using stairs.
